PhD Mathematical Engineer (Chemical Engineering & Machine Learning)
PhD in Chemical Engineering with a focus on mathematical modelling.
Start date: To be agreed.
Duration & hours: Full-time permanent contract, 40 hours per week
Salary: Competitive up to £42k
Workplace: Currently hybrid working pattern of two days in the office in Altrincham, Cheshire, followed by three days home working.
Travel Required: There is no immediate requirement for business travel, but you must be open to travel on an ad hoc basis to meet business demands.

We are looking for a highly skilled and innovative Mathematical Engineer with a PhD in Chemical Engineering with a focus on implementing and improving mathematical models for complex problem-solving and optimising processes from the Oil and Gas Industry to join our Model Integration team.
As a Mathematical Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our chemical processes, optimizing processes, and driving product development.
Your expertise in chemical engineering and mathematical modelling will be instrumental in
shaping our future.
Qualifications & Skills:
- PhD in Chemical Engineering with a focus on developing and optimising mathematical models for the Chemical Engineering industry.
- Strong understanding of mathematical modelling and optimisation approaches for engineering purposes (particularly non-linear oil and gas processes).
- Knowledge and/or experience in modelling complex engineering processes (for example, crude distillation).
- Experience working in an Agile delivery framework.
- Proven track-record for skills related to developing new ideas aimed at modelling/data issues identification and improvements in mathematical modelling using General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS).
- Experience in developing and running mathematical models in software packages other than GAMS (such as MATLAB, Python, Mathematica etc.).
- Knowledge on Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
- Basic understanding of ANN and machine learning processes.
- Excellent critical thinking skills and a passion for innovation.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities – Ability to present mathematical models and results to a wider audience.
Responsibilities:
Advanced Modelling Development and Testing:
- Utilize in-house tools to configure and refine mathematical models tailored for Oil and Gas industry processes, ensuring they meet operational standards and objectives.
- Proactively identify, diagnose, and resolve issues within existing mathematical models to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
- Conduct thorough assessments of model performance and output, implementing modifications to optimize reliability and validity of results.
- Modelling and optimisation of refinery, petrochemical, and chemical processes.
- Collect and analyse data, perform economic assessments, contribute to model training and integration, and participate in product testing for projects.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines, including process engineers and other specialists to integrate mathematical models into the design, operation, and control of chemical processes, ensuring alignment with project objectives and industry standards.
- Present findings, progress, and recommendations to stakeholders and senior management.
Research and Innovation:
- Engage in the ongoing development and enhancement of in-house tools for model configuration, proposing innovative solutions to improve functionality and user experience.
- Conduct cutting-edge research to advance the state-of-the-art in mathematical modelling, computational techniques, and process optimization within the chemical engineering domain, contributing to technological advancements in the field.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, actively participating in knowledge sharing and professional development activities to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices.

There is a two-stage interview process first with a phone interview. Then the final interview with case study presentation requirements which will be conducted in person at the company office location in Altrincham.
